Female vocalists I quite like
Not the best, not the most original, and not the most interesting – except Regina Spektor, who is all of those – these are some female voices that I happen to like at the moment. Mostly because I’ve recently gotten back to listening to Symphonic Metal and it’s the vocals that carry that genre, and are perhaps all that separates it from Power Metal, but also because that’s just what I feel like listening to these days.
Regina Spektor
This girl gets her own section. I only discovered her yesterday, and I’ve since listened to her music for hours and have ordered ‘Begin To Hope’ (2006) because it was only a fiver on play. Her vocal style is remarkably unique, it sounds almost like a stutter and is a perfect representation of much control she has over her voice. She’s also utterly adorable, so here’s some songs; all the links are to Youtube videos.
Katie Melua – Always helps me sleep
Lara Fabian – This one song is enough for an entry.
Charlotte Wessels (Delain) – Still a relatively young band, this girl will have a solid place in metal for some time.
Annette Olzen (Nightwish) – Hated by Nightwish fans who don’t like change. I think she makes their music better.
Jonsu (Indica) & this one – Quite a little known all-female act from somewhere in Europe. Musically it’s pop, but thematically it’s mystical and akin to light symphonic metal.
Heather Findlay, Irene Jansen & Marcela Bovio – Ayreon is a special band. The ‘director’, if you will, is Arjen Lucassen, and he always recruits lots guests singers for Ayreon’s progressive metal concept albums. The man is a god damn genius, not least because he can find talent like this and have the audacity to use three different singers in this one song.

Lack of Imogen Heap on this list makes it fail. Sort it out.
